The most important thing to remember about fundraising is this - If you don't ask for it, you will not get it!
Most people and businesses are happy to donate to a good cause but don't be offended or upset if they say no. It could be that they would like to, but just feel embarrassed to tell you they cannot afford it.
Don't try to do too much too soon. Break your target down into manageable amounts of say £100 and set yourself a time by which you are going to try to raise it - say a month or two weeks.
Try to make it as easy as possible for peole to sponsor you. Accept whatever they can provide - if money great! - if a voucher for a service or some stock from the shop - great! you can save them up and have a tombola, raffle, or just sell them to raise funds.
If you write to prospective sponsors, always enclose a S.A.E. (stamped addressed envelope) so that they can reply quickly and post back to you.
Set up a temporary e-mail address relating to your fundraising efforts with one of the web e-mail services. e.g.
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
Put this on all of your letters and messages so people can e-mail you back easily, while you keep your private e-mail account private.
Offer to take whatever they can give then and there.
Be reliable and punctual. If you say you will return at a set time, do so or at least phone to say why you cannot make it and arrange another time. People will be more likely to sponsor someone reliable who will complete the task.
Always return calls from people you have contacted. You never know where it will lead!
Promote yourself as much as possible. Contact local radio stations, newspapers etc to see if they will tell everyone about your sponsorship and charity fundraising attempt. Many will do it for free.
Give yourself enough time. It can take time to raise funds and many organisations need 6 months notice or more. Remember, schools, other charities, clubs and individuals will also be asking for sponsorship, donations or raffle prizes.
Approach your employer and get the company on your side!
You can find more fund raising ideas by searching on the internet. If you don't have a computer, use a friends or the local library which is usually free.
Happy Fundraising!
